The Bedford...A New Lounge-y Restaurant in Town

So I nibbled and threw back a few this past weekend at a new joint in Chi-town called The Bedford. It’s a lounge-y restaurant located within an old 1920’s bank. The mixologist is shakin’ and stirrin’ up some rave reviews with his specialty cocktails (I’m sure I insulted him when I ordered a plain old beer) and the food is deliciously amazing.

As for the space and layout, kudos to them for retaining the original bank mouldings, flooring, doors and bank writing desk. The true “money spot” is the intact bank vault with safety deposit boxes that’s now a cocktail lounge. The furniture is a big disappointment, but the space itself is fan-tab-u-lous!

Another successful aspect of The Bedford is the fluid zoning of multiple spaces for different uses. The long bar that greets you upon entry is balanced with some high-tops and a few low-tops next to the fireplace…but in general its open enough to allow standing people to drink and socialize. Then straight ahead are U-shaped banquettes which are good for groups who want to order punch bowls and the sorts. Off to the side is the dining area that’s tucked away nicely and then lastly there’s the bank vault with the cocktail lounge.

All in all, it's a place worth experiencing. Read more about The Bedford here.

Why You Gotta Be So Dramatic?

Well...I love the drama of these stairs...Clean, modern, monolithic and elegant all wrapped into one. Drama, bring it on!

    Fall Is Upon Us

Hello, Hello Friends! I’m finally settling back into my routine after ending a whirlwind trip on the east coast. Our regularly scheduled program will now resume!

Speaking of scheduled program, fall seems to be right on schedule. Although I love summer, I have to say the change in weather is quite refreshing. The smell and sounds of a crackling fire and warm fall colors of rust, pumpkin, and yellows have me embracing this next season.

One Door Opens, Another One Closes

This entrance hall is not overly elegant but the floor pattern and doors with built-in windows are a nice touch.

    Desert Oasis - Amangiri

Amanresorts always have one thing in common…monolithic hotels set within awesome remote (usually) locales that are contextually relevant and contemporary. Their formula is once again a “winning” combination with Amangiri. And this one sure is remote. Situated on the southern Utah side of the Four Corners region in America, you can fly into a landing strip on the Arizona side and then take a short 20 minute drive to the resort. I hear the views are breathtaking. Think dramatic canyon landscape with crazy rock formations for miles coupled with the natural, colorful hues and textures of the Navajo desert. Then you’ve got bright, beautiful sunsets that bring rise to the moon and stars offering guests’ nature’s finest complimentary light show. Apparently the dinosaurs found the land to be agreeable as well because fossils and footprints dating back 160 million years ago are common in the area.  Keep a lookout! You never know what you might uncover.

Of course, no oasis is complete without a Swimming Pool, Spa, Cellar, Living Room, Gallery, Library, Dining Room and Suites. The main Pavilion houses the former sans the Spa and Suites which are found in two expansive wings (hmmm, do I see a conceptual link to Native American culture?) called the Desert and Mesa Wing with a grand total of just 34 suites.  Cool desert nights encourage guests to be warmed by their private bonfires and to soak in their surroundings on the terrace. Really, I could go on and on about this place…but I think it’s best just to experience it yourself. P.S. The video is visual eye-candy worth watching!

    La Villa Paris Restaurant

Cocktail Lounge, Restaurant, Piano Bar – La Villa Paris has it all. Located close to the Arch de Triomphe, this hot stop designed by Gilles and Boissier is reminiscent of a deconstructed version of the Chanel brand. Think blushing shades of rosy cheeks, rouge lips and that famously sleek “Chanel black”.  Add in a sophisticated Parisian café with a haute couture French living room and you have La Villa Paris. It’s the best of Paris all wrapped into one.
