    Corrour Lodge in Scotland

This “castle” in Scotland is out of a fairy tale book, that is, a 21st century fairy tale book. Corrour Lodge and the 57,000 acres it sits on are full of highlands, moors, and lochs…oh my, with lots of pony trekking, deer hunting and eagle spotting; activities you can do on the fly. To get there you can arrive by overnight train, helicopter or seaplane. If you take the latter you’ll make a sweeping entrance as you land in Loch Ossian, the lake the lodge overlooks.

The silvery granite and steel-glass façade are a bit of an unusual choice for the lush, remote landscape of the Highlands.  Corrour Lodge stands firmly on its pristine ground with its hard-edge geometry and austere looks but offers, nonetheless, serenity and escapism with its sweeping views over the calm waters of Loch Ossian.

While the lodge sleeps 30 people, it’s the children who get most excited as they will be sharing tales amongst one another in the dedicated “bunk bed room” which sleeps 14 little ones. The adults can indulge in their own luxuries such as throwing a dinner party in the formal dining room, selecting a good book to read from the library, or playing a round of pool in the game room. Corrour Lodge is a sanctuary of comfort in the “wilds of Scotland”.

    Beach Home

Summer is almost here; I can taste it. Ok, I know we have a ways to go but, in the meantime, allow yourself to dream...light-filled rooms, wide-plank wood floors, artistically-posed seating moments, and checkerboard tile patterns…the sophistication and warmth of a beach home.

    Serious (Chocolate) Business...

There’s no subliminal messaging here. A day late (happy v-day, peeps), but nevertheless delectable, you can’t resist having chocolate on your mind while visiting this Godiva shop in Tokyo. While the detailing and marble staircase lends a classical hand to the space, ceilings and walls dripping chocolate set a more playful tone. Yum!

    Sculptural Moments

A majestic stair with its sinuous steel railing fits seamlessly into the turret, rustic wood beams drape down from above to give sculptural emphasis while a 17th century Italian walnut door adds great character.

And this bathroom with similar quality, although from a different interior, I could imagine could be part of the same home.

    Flashes of Inspiration

Joseph Dirand’s work is always a showstopper. He flirts with modernism and classicism with ease, swaying back and forth to a well played beat sometimes crisp, sometimes fluid. You may remember this boutique hotel…yeah, he’s guilty of damn good design.

Yes, definitely agree projects appear as flashes of inspiration AND inspirations come as flashes, at random times of day at totally unexpected moments; it hits you vividly, jolting you from the present…that’s when innovation strikes. It’s the subconscious wildly working away in the background; an indication one’s passionate about their practice. Brilliance emerges when ordinary objects transcend into something deeper, more meaningful…it’s when I put pen to sketch paper to record and store for later when the timing is right for that perfect project and place. Just yesterday, a flash (of inspiration) came to me for the boutique hotel project…a small sketch and a pin up later…and I was on to something else.
